  3. SHS Welcomes New English Teacher

By Morgan Humphrey, SHS Student Writer

Kelly Short might be a new teacher to the building, but she is familiar with the halls of Salem High School, where she graduated in 1986. Short took over for Megan Elign’s classes at the start of second semester, and this is her 30th year teaching.

“I spent 17 years at Jeffersonville High School, 13 years at Clarksville, and now I am at Salem,” she said.

Short went to Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) and majored in journalism. She then stayed an extra two years and added education.

“I got a Masters in Education from Indiana University Southeast and a Masters in Sports Administration from the University of Louisville,” she said.

Being a new teacher at any school is hard, but coming in during the school year is a big change. When asked about how she felt about starting in the middle of the year, Short said, “It’s different…you have uneven footing with everyone. The classes are already bonded as a group, and it is definitely a learning experience.”

Short said her biggest challenge this year would be learning the different AP guidelines and making sure she provides a quality learning experience for all her students.

When asked what she was looking forward to most this year, Short said, “Restoring her faith in the education process.”

After she got her journalism degree, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to work for a newspaper and do small town reporting. During her time at IUB, she went to their journalism workshop as a student. She loved it so much she became a counselor there. She got to help kids with their editing and refining process.

Through that experience, she began to think, “You know, if I really like it, then maybe I should be a teacher,” she said.

When asked what she loves most about her job, she said, “the people. Having a journalism background and being in a sorority have enabled me to be able to have small talk with anybody… that is the best part about being in the classroom, getting to know the students, making the connections, and helping them figure out who they want to be.”

The SHS student body and faculty are happy to welcome Short back to Lion Nation.
